1958
Donald and Erna Hornig purchase a 10-unit building located at 3523 Grand Avenue in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Hornig family still owns this property today.

1966
Donald and Erna Hornig purchase the property at 2300 Aldrich Avenue in Minneapolis.

1967
The Hornigs’ son and daughter-in-law, Dave and Barb Hornig, take over care-taking duties at 2300 Aldrich Avenue, a position they held from 1967-1972.  During this time, Dave and Barb became the proud parents of two sons, Jeff and Jon Hornig, who were perfectly well-behaved little boys – sometimes. This same year, Donald and Erna purchase 2641 Garfield Avenue in Minneapolis. At the age of 45, Donald quits his factory job in downtown Minneapolis to focus on apartment acquisition and management full-time.

1971
Dave and Barb Hornig acquire their first property at 2655 Colfax Avenue in the Uptown area of Minneapolis. The Hornigs own the building today, making the claim that this 12-unit building has aged better than they have.

1972
The total number of units in the Hornigs’ portfolio reaches 100.

1976
Dave Hornig and his brother, Gary Hornig, build their first rental property on Sheridan Avenue in Minneapolis.

1979
Dave Hornig transitions from a 10-year career as a high school teacher to start a new career as a Realtor.

1982
Dave and Barb purchase an apartment building at 3252 Girard Avenue in Minneapolis. At 37, Dave quits selling homes to work full-time  managing the family’s rental properties.

1983
The Hornigs acquire their first government-financed rental property.

1985
After 30 years in the business, the Hornigs’ family portfolio reaches 500 apartments.

1987-96
The Hornigs build several hundred apartment units through a government tax credit program.

1995
The Hornigs’ portfolio reaches 1,000 apartments.

2001
The Hornigs purchase their largest property, Heritage Heights in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, adding 192 units to their portfolio.

2002
The Hornigs’ portfolio reaches 2,000 apartments.

2007
Currently, the Hornigs’ portfolio consists of nearly 3,000 apartments.
