Tips for Moving

Did you know that spring is one of the most popular times to move in Minnesota? Longer days, milder temperatures, and a fresh start to the season make it an ideal time to transition into a new home.
At Hornig Companies, we want to help make your move as smooth and stress-free as possible. Whether you're relocating within the Twin Cities or settling into a new neighborhood, here are some practical tips to keep in mind this spring.

Schedule a Move-Out Inspection
Before handing over your keys, take time to complete a thorough move-out inspection. At Hornig Companies, this step helps ensure a clear and fair assessment of your apartment’s condition.
Be sure to:
● Clean your unit thoroughly, including appliances, cabinets, and floors
● Patch small holes and remove personal items
● Take photos for your records
● Return all keys, fobs, and parking passes
Completing these steps can help avoid unnecessary charges and make your transition smoother.

Plan Around the Weather
Midwest springs can be a bit unpredictable - sunshine one day, rain (or even a late snowfall) the next. Keep an eye on the forecast as your move approaches and have a backup plan in case of wet weather. Use waterproof bins for important items and keep towels or tarps handy to protect furniture during loading and unloading.

Pack Efficiently
Moving is the perfect opportunity to lighten your load. Go through your belongings and set aside items you no longer need. Donate gently used clothing and household goods, recycle what you can, and dispose of anything that’s no longer usable. Fewer items mean less to pack - and less to unpack later.
Clearly label your boxes by room and contents. This will make unpacking much easier and help movers (or friends and family) know exactly where everything belongs. Consider creating a “first-night” box with essentials like toiletries, a change of clothes, chargers, and basic kitchen supplies.

Switch Your Utilities
Many of our properties require tenants to set up an Xcel Energy account to pay their electricity. Be sure to schedule utility transfers or set up new services before move-in day. This includes electricity, gas, water, internet, and any other essential services - depending on your specific situation. Don’t forget to update your address with the post office, your employer, and any subscription services.

Moving Into Your New Place
When you arrive at your new home, take a few minutes to document its condition using your Hornig move-in inspection form. This is especially important in many of our historic buildings, where original features add charm but may include minor wear.
Be sure to:
● Check walls, floors, windows, and appliances
● Test lights, outlets, and plumbing
● Note anything that may need attention and submit it promptly through your resident portal
Submitting your inspection on time helps our maintenance team address requests efficiently and ensures your records are accurate.

Enjoy the Process
Moving can be a lot of work, but it’s also an exciting opportunity to start fresh. Many Hornig communities are located in vibrant, walkable neighborhoods throughout Minneapolis and Saint Paul - perfect for getting out and enjoying the spring weather.
Take time to explore your surroundings, meet your neighbors, and make your new space feel like home. If you have any questions about your move, inspections, or your new home, the Hornig Companies team is here to help every step of the way.
